Emergency & Resuscitative Surgery Skills Course (Cork) 2025

About this event

Optimal multidisciplinary trauma management saves lives and reduces morbidity for the injured patient. This two-day interactive course will take place in the high-fidelity simulation suite and cadaver surgical skills lab of the ASSERT Centre, UCC.

The first day will be spent learning to work as part of a multidisciplinary team in the initial reception and management of major trauma patients. Simulated scenarios based on real cases will cover initial assessment and management of polytrauma patients and attendees will learn a systematic approach to critical decision making and intervention and the introduction of E-FAST ultrasound.

On the second day, in the cadaver lab, surgical trainees and consultants will learn the common and the less commonly required techniques and exposures encountered in emergency surgery particularly in severely injured patients. Some of the procedures that will be practiced are aortic clamping, the pringle manoeuvre and visceral rotation. Operative management of injury to the liver, spleen and kidney will be emphasised.

There will also be exposure and operative management of injury to the thoracic aorta and pericardium demonstrated and practiced.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Increase your proficiency in prompt surgical intervention in trauma.
  • Gain more confidence in effective teamwork and communication in trauma.
  • Improve your skills in timely decision making in surgical management.
  • Gain knowledge in organ and lifesaving procedures in polytrauma.
