BA Field School
Sherkin Island Field School in the BA Anthropology Programme
As part of the BA Anthropology Programme, second-year students participate in AY2001, an intensive field training module on Sherkin Island located in West Cork. Over four days, students explore the archaeology and cultural landscape of the island through site visits and field walks. These activities are complemented by lectures and discussions on island archaeology, cultural heritage, and anthropological approaches to landscape and place. Assessment for this module includes a field diary and a photographic essay project.
The field school is usually held in early April. In 2025 it was led by Dr Eóin Parkinson, visiting lecturer Dr Tom Crowley, Mr Nick Hogan, and Dr Susannah Chapman. Learn more about the 2025 Sherkin Island Field School Programme here.
