About Us

Anthropology is the study of humankind across space and time. It takes a holistic approach to the study of all facets of the human condition, from human evolution and biology to linguistic, social, and cultural diversity. In its attention to understanding cultural sameness and difference, anthropology teaches us to think reflexively about our own cultural lenses. Anthropology thus provides a unique way of looking at the world that offers a greater understanding of the human experience to address urgent issues of our time.

Anthropology at UCC is comprised of a vibrant community of scholars working across the four subfields of archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology. Our research and teaching explores themes of human evolution and adaptation, heritage and colonial histories, human-environment relations, semiotics and religion, and ethics, economies, and emerging technologies. Staff are engaged in research in many different parts of the world, including South and East Asia, Europe, West Africa, and The Caribbean.

We offer degree and short courses in Anthropology, including a BA in four-field anthropology and an MA in sociocultural anthropology. Our students are involved in study in Ireland and overseas.
