Student reps from four UNIC partners took part in the Model EU event hosted in February by the UCC Law Society on campus. UCC UNIC student rep Alex Sheehan took the initiative to invite his counterparts from across the UNIC network.

The Model EU event was an opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding about how the EU works. Students simulated the roles of Members of the European Parliament (MEP) and Ministers in the Council of EU, thus getting a first-hand insight into how EU laws and decisions are made.

The event brought together students from across Irish universities as well as from UNIC partner universities. Three student representatives attended: María Valvanera Huidobro Martínez (University of Deusto), Jarno Slendebroek (University of Oulu), and Karelle Marneffe (University of Liège).

Referring to the event, Oulu student rep Jarno Slendebroek said that "UNIC gave me the chance to connect with people all over Europe and made me learn many new insights of the countries where the UNIC partner universities are located."

UCC UNIC student rep and event co-organiser Alex Sheehan said, "we were particularly fortunate to have students participate from across Europe - an opportunity that was facilitated by UNIC. This was the first-of-its-kind Model EU in Ireland and the presence of students from a variety of backgrounds added a further insightful dimension to the event."
