Diploma in Arts (Applied Irish)

NFQ Level 7, Minor Award

The Diploma in Arts (Applied Irish) is a two-year, part-time programme and is open to those who have reached the required entrance standard and who wish to improve communicative skills in Irish in professional contexts. It is required that participants attend the Diploma programme for two consecutive years. UCC students may be allowed to take the Diploma in Arts (Applied Irish) alongside their University programme, subject to the approval of the relevant Heads of Department. Students who have already succeeded in attaining Diploma Level 6 Standard in Applied Irish will be exempted from modules GA1060, GA1061 of First Year of this Diploma (NFQ Level 7) programme. Students who successfully complete the Diploma in Arts (Applied Irish) will be exempted from the First Year of the Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree Programme in Modern Irish. The Diploma in Arts (Applied Irish) is accepted in lieu of a H4 in higher level Leaving Certificate Irish as eligibility to apply for entry to the Postgraduate Course in Primary Teaching in Colleges of Education.

Certificate in Arts (Applied Irish)
Students who successfully complete and pass 30 credits of taught modules in Year 1 may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Certificate in Arts (Applied Irish).

Applicants must satisfy the minimum entry requirements of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences. Those who will be 23 years of age on or before 1st January of the year of proposed entry (or those who hold a degree or its equivalent by the normal closing date for application) may be recommended for entry on the grounds of mature years even if they do not meet the entry requirements specified above. In addition, all applicants must have obtained a minimum of Grade D3 in Irish in the Leaving Certificate Examination (Higher Level), or its equivalent. As there is a substantial online element to the course, basic IT skills are also required. All applications undergo a selection process which may include a written or oral examination or both. If the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places available (25), the Diploma Organising Committee will make recommendations to College on the selection of applicants.
