Groundwater Project GSI

Introduction

The primary objective of this project was to enhance the understanding of groundwater flooding dynamics in Cork City by examining the influences of river levels and tidal variations in the River Lee on the underlying aquifer, and to quantify the river–aquifer connectivity. This study quantified current and future groundwater flooding hazards in Cork City by analysing continuous water level data from river gauges and groundwater wells. A groundwater model was developed, calibrated, and validated to simulate groundwater responses to tidal forcing and SLR scenarios.

Data Collection of Groundwater Monitoring

Data from seven groundwater monitoring wells were gathered in Cork City Centre, and three in the western part of the city are currently being actively monitored, which is part of the GSI-funded project.
