Dr Catherine Keogh (née Slattery) graduated from UCC with a BSc Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds in 2008 and PhD in synthetic organic chemistry under the supervision of Professor Anita R. Maguire in 2012, leading to fundamental discoveries which have been published in leading journals in the field and continue to underpin current research in the team in UCC today. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of MSD, Ballydine, where Catherine was employed until her untimely death in December 2019, an annual scholarship has been established to be known as "The Dr Catherine Keogh Memorial Grant" in her honour. This prize will be awarded to a final year student on the BSc Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds programme who, in addition to academic achievement, has demonstrated personal growth over the course of the programme with a clear commitment to teamwork, and supporting others on their learning journey, in addition to making a positive contribution to the programme, class and student life.

The value of the prize is up to €5,000 to be used towards the winner’s college education.

Eligibility and Selection

Students may apply for the scholarship subject to the following conditions:

1. It shall be open to competition annually only among registered BSc Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds undergraduates who have completed the 3^rd year of their degree and who have achieved a mark of at least a 2H1, at the first attempt, in the previous Summer University Examination without compensation and without exemption.
2. To apply, students must write a reflective piece (500-1000 words) describing their overall experience of the CPC course and what it means to them to be part of this programme and class; highlight the impact participation in this programme, and the embedded industry placement, has had on their career plans, personal development, outlook and preparation for final year of the degree and beyond; demonstrate their contribution to student life at the University or through outreach and public engagement.
3. Applications shall be assessed by a three person selection committee.
4. The assessment shall take into account the academic record (in particular evidence of improved academic performance over the years of the programme) and the reflective piece submitted as part of the application.
5. Applicants may be required to participate in an interview with the adjudicators.

The above conditions may be varied from time to time, and will be reviewed annually.
