Six Myths about Deepfake Abuse

Deepfake media is often used as part of bullying and harassment online. The public harassment of targets is often accompanied by attempts to invalidate victims’ experiences using a number of “deepfake myths”. Our work aims to challenge the myths behind deepfake perpetration.

Consider each of the six myths below and think about whether you agree with it. Then, click on the myth to learn more and see real quotes from victims of deepfake abuse.

* The extent to which people agree or disagree with these myths can be assessed via the Deepfake Myths Acceptance Scale (DMAS). See the Resources tab to download a free copy of this scale, which has excellent psychometric properties and is predictive of past and future engagement with deepfake perpetration, including the watching, sharing and creating of deepfake media.
