Try our Counter-Deepfake Abuse Intervention

What is this intervention?

This is a values-based intervention that encourages participants to learn about the realities of deepfake abuse and to feel empathy for those who are targeted. It is grounded in well-established behaviour change techniques, designed to broaden understanding and change beliefs about deepfake perpetration.

How long does it take?

The intervention takes around 5-10 minutes in total.

Who can take part in this intervention?

Anyone - it is free and accessible via the link below. We have thus far trialed the intervention and confirmed its effectiveness with a broad sample of thousands of adults, as well as a large sample of university students. We plan to trial the intervention with secondary school students in the near future.

Does it work?

Yes, our evaluation studies have established that this intervention is effective. People who complete the intervention reported reduced belief in common deepfake myths and reported reduced intentions to engage in deepfake abuse in future (e.g. the watching, sharing or creating of non-consensual deepfakes). Participants also reported enjoying the intervention and feeling more educated and empowered about the topic of deepfake abuse.

This intervention made me double think impact of deepfakes on real people. It was effective because it made me realize how even jokes or private videos can hurt others.

It helped me connect with the impacted person and really think what they might go through.

I think it was very useful to show that deepfakes can be damaging even if people know they aren't real.  Too much of the deepfake discourse focuses on people being unable to tell them apart from reality when that's only part of the issue.

I liked how practical this intervention was. I can see how it can be applied across ages to tackle the behavior.

I like how realistic and relatable the scenarios were. they made me stop and think differently. It didn't feel like a lecture. It felt honest and thought provoking
