Trees by a stream

Work Package 1 - Project Management

  • To coordinate and manage project activities.
  • To ensure successful completion of the project.

Work Package 2 - Ancillary Data and Knowledge Transmission, Literature Review and Mapping of Study Catchments.

  • Transfer of knowledge from the EPA-funded SWAMP project to C-UISCE project.
  • Extend site monitoring from SWAMP to C-UISCE project.
  • Synthesize national and international literature relating to land use and condition, and their roles in the magnitude of carbon losses.
  • Risk-based selection of catchments and develop regional maps of DOC sources and pathways for use in sampling.

Work Package 3 - Spatio-Temporal Dynamics of DOC Export and Ecological Impacts at Catchment Scale.

  • To establish paired high-frequency DOC export and hydrometeorological monitoring stations at selected catchments.
  • To quantify DOC export patterns and fluxes from catchments over two hydrological years.
  • To undertake a targeted spatial sampling programme investigating biological water quality impacts from carbon cycle dynamics.
  • To risk rank potential DOC sources and hydrological export pathways which impact ecological receptors and drinking water treatment.

Work Package 4 - Laboratory Soil Column and Organic Carbon Historical Baseline Assessment.

  • Determine DOC export from minerogenic and organic soils under future climate and management scenarios.
  • Collect soil cores from a number of sites within each catchment and subject to hydrological fluctuations and temperature increase under controlled laboratory conditions.
  • Ascertain background levels of organic carbon from each catchment using lake sediment archives as sentinels of changes in carbon at the catchment scale to feed into WP5.

Work Package 5 - C-UISCE DOC Flux Calculation and Modelling.

  • Calculate DOC fluxes for monitored catchments.
  • Perform statistical analyses to elucidate spatiotemporal trends and drivers of DOC in the ROI.
  • Perform mathematical modeling to estimate DOC fluxes at the national scale.

Work Package 6 - Communication, Dissemination and Knowledge Transfer.

  • Ensure clear communication and active dissemination of research results and knowledge transfer between partnering universities, EPA Research, NPWS, and all relevant stakeholders.
  • Effectively and timely communication and dissemination of project findings to stakeholders.
  • Ensure the EPA Research Project Communication Strategy, and EPA Open Data and Open Access Policy is observed.
