Atsushi Funahashi (Film Director, Tokyo) Talk and Conversation, Chair: Till Weingärtner Atsushi Funahashi (b. 1974) is a Japanese film director. After his debut feature Echoes, he directed the road movie Big River (2005), starring Joe Odagiri, Chloe Snyder and Kavi Raz. Funahashi has addressed contentious social issues in many of his films. In his documentaries Nuclear Nation (2012) and Nuclear Nation 2 (2015), he focuses on people fleeing the affected areas of Northern Japan following the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Power Plant. In his most recent film, Company Retreat (2022), he engages with the topic of sexual harassment in the workplace. He also campaigns for more equal opportunities for Japanese filmmakers, regardless of their background or gender. As a co-founder of action4cinema, he advocates for the creation of a national agency for film production and promotion, following the model of the French Centre National du Cinéma et de l'Image Animée (CNC).
