This lecture is part of the Asian Studies Spring Lecture Series 2023. Abstract: We are living in a multilingual world and many of us speak two or more languages in everyday life. Acquiring an additional language in bilinguals is unique and reveals things about the links between language and mind, brain and cognition. In this talk, some key issues of generative approaches to second/third language acquisition will be discussed. Two empirical studies on the L3 acquisition of Mandarin Chinese by English-Cantonese bilinguals will be reported to tackle questions concerning L3 initial stages, later development and L3 processing mechanisms.
