Transperineal (TP) biopsy of the prostate gland is a diagnostic procedure for prostate cancer. To date this procedure is more often done under a general anaesthetic or spinal anaesthetic in a patient who requires hospital admission. Recently, techniques have been developed to perform TP biopsy using local anaesthetic in an outpatient setting. The traditional method of prostate biopsy involves a transrectal (TR) approach. However, the risk of bloodstream infection or sepsis following this procedure is relatively high (2-5%), and so in several centres, this has been superseded by TP biopsy which has a much lower sepsis rate (approx. 0.01%). This hands-on cadaveric training course provides Radiologists and Urologists with the knowledge and technical skills to perform transperineal (TP) prostate biopsy under local anaesthetic. Through expert-led instruction and real-tissue simulation, participants will learn to navigate complex pelvic anatomy, utilise ultrasound for accurate guidance, and perform systematic prostate sampling. This course bridges the gap between theory and practice in a controlled, low-risk environment.
Learning outcomes:
After doing this course you will:
- Identify relevant pelvic and perineal anatomy for TP biopsy.
- Operate ultrasound for transperineal imaging.
- Administer local anaesthetic using a co-axial needle approach.
- Perform systematic TP prostate biopsies.
