In the case of the PhD (Health Services Research), the programme
requirements are as follows: The programme contains a number of
components which support the student's PhD research and submission. The
programme will have two main components, a formal training programme
covering a range of research knowledge and skills, and a supervised
thesis. The formal training programme will be made up of 4 training
strands with strand 1 completed in Year 1 and strands 2 -4 extending
over 4 years. Head supervisors will be assigned to individual students
at the end of year 1. The PhD (Health Services Research) is a
four-year, full-time programme.
The four formal training strands will be:
While strands 2 - 4 will extend over the first three years of the
programme, the focus in year 2 will be on professional skills and
specialist research skills and in year 3 on career development skills.
Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholars will be offered an
opportunity to experience a professional role in year 4 of the
programme, such as serving on a research ethics committee or membership
of a relevant health service advisory group.
Year 1
The following modules will be undertaken in Year 1 of the programme:
EH7001 Population and Individual Health (15 credits)
EH7002 Health Systems, Policy Informatics (15 credits)
EH7003 Evidence Synthesis and Clinical Trials (5 credits)
EH7004 Interrogation, interpreting and reporting scientific data
and health information (integrated epidemiology/biostatistics) (5
credits)
EH7005 Introduction to Health Economics and Econometrics (10
credits)
OH7013 Research Methods (Part 1 Quantitative, Part 2
Qualitative) (10 credits)
Students will normally undertake a relevant placement, identify a
suitable project and produce a viable thesis proposal by the end of
Year 1. Students are required to pass Module 1 - 6 before progressing
to Year 2 of the programme. Students who fail the Autumn Supplemental
examination will exit the programme.
Year 2
Students will develop a PhD research plan for the year in consultatin
with their supervisors. The plan will include agreed objectives and
goals for the year: Students will normally undertake a two week
international placement.
Students will be required to take EH7006 Research Development
and Academic Writing (10 credits).
Students will be asked to make a formal presentation at the end of Year
2.
Students who fail EH7006 at the Autumn Supplemental examination
will be allowed to carry the failed module forward, but must pass the
module before the award of PhD in Year 4.
Year 3
Students will further develop their PhD research in consultation with
their supervisors. This will include agreed objectives and goals for
the year: Students will also be required to partake in supervision of a
Masters level thesis under the direction of their suprevisors.
Students will be required to take EH7007 Applied Research
Methods in Health Services Research (10 credits)
Students who fail EH7007 at the Autumn Supplemental examination
will be allowed to carry the failed module forward, but must pass the
module before the award of PhD in Year 4.
Year 4
Final PhD submission and viva.
