Department of Early and Medieval Irish, School of Irish Learning

Postgraduate Diploma in Youth Work

Entry Requirements:

  • Applicants will normally have achieved a minimum grade of a 2H2 in an Honours degree.
  • Candidates will be normally be graduates from cognate disciplines, including but not limited to: Social Science, Education (incl. Sports Studies), Social Work, Early Years and Childhood Studies, Social Care (NFQ Level 8), Sociology and Psychology.
  • Applicants are also required to possess a minimum of two years' experience in a paid or voluntary capacity in a full-time youth work position (or equivalent part-time experience)

LLM (Practitioner)
In advance of registration for the degree candidates who satisfy the entry requirements may opt to take individual LLM modules on a non-degree occasional basis from those on offer in the programme. These candidates will be identified as intending to proceed to the LLM (Practitioner) and a Learning Agreement will be entered into to provide a bridge to the degree. (This can be a flexible agreement and modified as necessary as the candidate proceeds). As part of UCC's commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD), candidates opting not to continue with the degree will be provided with a relevant transcript of marks.

School of Clinical Therapies

Entry Requirements

  • Candidates will hold either an undergraduate honours degree (NFQ Level 8, minimum Second Class Honours, Grade 1) or a postgraduate degree, in any scientific or medical discipline, such as but not exclusively, Audiology, Anatomy, Biomedical Science, Engineering, Social Sciences, Speech and Language Therapy, Medicine, Nursing and Education.
  • In exceptional circumstances candidates without an honours degree may be recommended for entry to the programme after a review of their qualifications and experience by the programme lead. The admission of such candidates will be subject to the approval of the School of Clinical Therapies.
  • Applications will be reviewed on the basis of educational qualifications, relevant work experience and motivation.

CPD module credit towards the MSc in Hearing, Balance and Communication:
In accordance with UCC's policy on Recognition of Prior Learning, a student who has successfully completed modules for Continuous Professional Development within the MSc in Hearing, Balance and Communication programme, and/or has completed relevant university postgraduate modules in a cognate area at similar NFQ level (subject to approval of the Programme Team), and who meets the entry requirements for that programme, can apply to register for the MSc in Hearing, Balance and Communication with exemptions granted for modules taken within the previous five years to a maximum of 20 credits. This will require a PAC application by the student for the MSc.


School of Medicine



Department of General Practice

As part of UCC's commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD), CPD modules in Primary Care are now offered by the Department of General Practice.

Entry Requirements
The Department of General Practice Continuing Professional Development modules are open to registered health care professionals in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Allied Health care disciplines or applicants who hold a relevant primary degree. Applicants must provide evidence of current registration with the relevant professional regulatory body (for example, the Irish Medical Council, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (active registration) and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland). Applicants not registered with one of the above professional bodies must provide evidence of a level 8 qualification in a relevant health care discipline.

Candidates whose first language is not English must have a minimum of IELTS 6.5 with scores in no individual sections less than 6.0.

All applicants are required to complete an application form and provide evidence of either current professional registration or primary degree.

The following modules are available:

GP5100 Diabetes in Primary Care (10 credits)
GP5101 Cardiovascular Disease in Primary Care (Blended learning module) (10 credits)
GP5102 Dementia in Primary Care (10 credits)
GP5103 Fundamentals of CVD in Primary Care (5 credits)

The 10-credit modules consist of twelve weeks’ worth of online distance learning units, supported by two face-to-face study days. The 5-credit modules consist of six weeks' worth of online distance learning units, supported by a face-to-face study day.
These modules will run annually only when minimum recruitment targets are met.

Palliative Care

Different entry requirements apply to each Palliative Care module.

Entry Requirements
Candidates must have:

  1. A primary degree or an equivalent experience in a relevant health care discipline* to be approved by the Programme Team;
  2. Registration or eligibility for registration with the appropriate professional healthcare registration body;
  3. Ideally candidates should have a minimum of one year post qualification experience in healthcare provision.
  4. *A relevant health care discipline includes but is not limited to medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, audiology, physiotherapy, psychology, and social studies.

All applicants are required to complete an application form and provide evidence of current professional registration.

The following module is available:
IP5001 Holistic Approach to Palliative Care (5 credits)

Entry Requirements
Candidates must have an honours primary degree or an equivalent qualification in medicine, nursing, pharmacy or dentistry.
All applicants are required to complete an application form and provide evidence of current professional registration.

Older Person Rehabilitation

The Continuing Professional Development Modules in Older Person Rehabilitation are designed to provide students from a range of different professional backgrounds with interdisciplinary learning in an area of Older Person Rehabilitation. Classes are held in blocks during weekdays. A ten-credit module equates to 200-250 hours of learning, including approximately 40-50 hours of structured contact time.

Entry Requirements
Candidates must have:

  1. A primary degree in a relevant health care discipline* or an equivalent academic qualification and professional experience to be approved by the Programme Team;
  2. Ideally candidates should have at least one year's practical experience in their area of qualifications post-registration.
  3. Applicants who do not meet the normal academic or experience requirements may also be considered following a review of their individual qualifications and experience by the Programme Team.

*A relevant health care discipline includes but is not limited to medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, speech and hearing science, audiology, physiotherapy, psychology and social studies.

All applicants are required to complete an application form and provide evidence of current professional registration.

Garda Vetting
Students, or applicants in receipt of an offer, taking certain modules will be subject to Garda Vetting as relevant. Click here to view UCC's Student Garda Vetting Policy.

Students may take one or more modules (to a maximum of twenty credits per year) from the following:

Dementia

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Entry Requirements

The Continuing Professional Development modules in Nursing and Midwifery are open to registered health care professionals in Nursing, Midwifery, Medicine, and Clinical Therapies or other allied disciplines. Some modules are open to registered nurses/midwives only (indicated below beside individual modules).

Applicants who are practising health care professionals must provide evidence of current registration with the relevant professional regulatory body (e.g. the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (active registration), the Irish Medical Council, the Health & Social Care Professions Council (or equivalent regulatory body for pharmacists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, speech and language therapists etc.)) Applicants from allied disciplines must provide evidence of professional certification, where appropriate.

Applicants who are under 23 years of age must satisfy the minimum entry requirements for the Degrees in Nursing or Midwifery, as set out here

Admission to the module(s) will be subject to internal university approval processes on the recommendation of the Head of School.

Applicants for Nursing and Midwifery CPD modules who do not hold an up-to-date IELTS certificate showing the requisite Academic Board approved COMH scores must demonstrate evidence of appropriate work experience within an English language environment for at least the previous 2 years.

NU6116 Advanced Practice in Nursing (10 Credits) and NU6154 Advanced Practice in Midwifery (10 Credits) - specific entry criteria:
Applicants must have a minimum of 7 years post-registration experience. The required experience must have been gained within the past 8 years with at least 5 years in the area in which advanced nursing or midwifery practice is being pursued. In addition, applicants must: (i) demonstrate continuous professional development and have completed a Master's degree; (ii) provide evidence of support from their employer and a completed Site Self-Declaration Form, signed by the Director of Nursing/Midwifery/Public Health/ authorised Nurse/Midwife Manager; (iii) provide nomination and confirmation of a designated medical practitioner mentor/and or Advanced Nurse or Midwife Practitioner mentor (completed Site Self-Declaration Form, signed by the Medical Practitioner/Advanced Nurse Practitioner Mentor) who will provide the student with supervision, support and learning opportunities including opportunities to practice under supervision to gain the required competencies and clinical competence to practice at an advanced level in nursing or midwifery. Applicants must contact their Director of Nursing/Midwifery/Public Health/authorised Nurse Manager to discuss the identified need for advanced nursing or midwifery practice in his/her practice area/organisation.

* Applicants for MH6136 must be practising Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapists with evidence of a core qualification and registration with their relevant body eg NMBI. Applicants must have completed a postgraduate course (NFQ Level 9) in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

*** Applicants for MH6014, MH6016, MH6099 and MH6112 must satisfy the following specific entry requirements:
Normally hold a Honours primary degree (minimum of a Second Class Honours Grade I):

  • in a relevant subject (e.g. nursing, medicine, pharmacy, clinical therapies, philosophy, law, theology, social sciences)
    OR
  • in any discipline and either possess a postgraduate qualification in a relevant field or show evidence of at least two years' work experience in a relevant field.

Applicants with a Second Class Honours Grade 2 will also be considered on a case by case basis.

Note: In exceptional circumstances, applicants without a primary degree may be recommended for entry to the module after a review of their individual qualifications and experience by the course committee.

**** Applicants for MH6014 and MH6016
Applicants must be practising professionals (Nursing, Medicine, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Education or other allied disciplines) with registration with the relevant professional regulatory body. Applicants for MH6014 must have achieved a pass result in a postgraduate research methods module equivalent to NU6005 (10 credits).

# Applicants for NU5098
This module has intakes in Semesters 1, 2 and 3. Applicants must be practising nurses with evidence of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) OR evidence that registration with the NMBI will be complete by the proposed commencement date of the module. Applicants must provide evidence that they will be working in a critical care environment (for a minimum of 19.5 hours/week). Applicants must provide a letter of support from their respective Director of Nursing and confirmation of having secured a clinical facilitator/preceptor for the duration of the module. This module is delivered online and via on campus/clinical site workshops and lectures.

## Applicants for NU6302, NU6303, NU6304, NU6306, NU6310, NU6312 and NU6313
Applicants must be qualified healthcare professionals registered with the regulatory body in their country of residence. Applicants must have a primary degree, NFQ Level 8 or equivalent. Applicants for NU6304 must have achieved a pass result in a postgraduate research methods module equivalent to NU6310 (10 credits).
Note: In exceptional circumstances, applicants who do not fulfil this entry requirement may be recommended for entry to the programme following a review of their individual qualifications and experience by the programme committee. Some such applicants may be invited for interview to satisfy the selection committee of their suitability for the programme. Admission to such applicants will be subject to the approval of the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

### Applicants for NU5081 and NU6153
Places on these modules are limited and are offered to applicants from the HSE South/South West Hospital Group or Community Health Organisation Area 4 in the first instance. Any remaining places may be offered to applicants not from these organisations. If additional places are available, they will be offered to applicants providing antenatal education within the public health services based on timing of application.

#### Applicants for NU6169
Applicants for NU6169 must in addition satisfy the following:
- Have completed a module in patient physical assessment.
- Have a minimum of 1 year's recent post registration clinical experience in nursing within the last 3 years.
- Provide evidence from an employer by way of a completed site declaration form, signed by the Director of Nursing / Authorised Nurse Manager, the nominated Clinical Supervisor (Medical Practitioner) and the Head of Radiology (Consultant Radiologist). This must contain confirmation of a designated Medical Practitioner who will act as a Clinical Supervisor providing supervision, support and learning opportunities, including opportunities to practice under supervision to gain the required competencies and clinical competence in authority to refer for radiological procedures.

Applicants for NU6171 must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS).

^^Applicants for MH6032
Applicants for MH6032 must have:
- An honours primary degree or an equivalent qualification in an appropriate healthcare profession* to be approved by the programme team.
*A relevant health care profession includes but is not limited to medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and hearing science, psychology, social science, pastoral care, art therapy.
- Applicants who do not meet these requirements, may, by virtue of their training and experience, at the discretion of the Programme Team, be deemed suitable for entry to the module. Such candidates may be requested to undergo an interview.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must be registered with the relevant professional accreditation authority and must provide proof of this registration (via professional registration number which can be verified) and a birth certificate or valid passport in order to register.

A student who successfully completes and passes a module under CPD and who satisfies the programme eligibility criteria may be eligible for exemptions if he/she subsequently undertakes a Postgraduate Certificate/Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Clinical Pharmacy within five years from the date of successful completion of the module (and subject to the module being offered on the Postgraduate Certificate/Postgraduate Diploma/MSc Clinical Pharmacy programmes).

Entry Requirements

(Pathway I)

  • Candidates must hold a primary pharmacy degree from a School of Pharmacy that is approved by the Programme Committee;
  • They must be registered with the professional accreditation authority in the country in which they are practising;
  • Candidates should have practical experience in their area of qualifications of at least one year post-registration;
  • All candidates will be required to have full access to computer and internet facilities and to be computer literate;
  • Candidates must be employed in a healthcare setting;
  • Applicants may be requested to undergo an interview;
  • In some exceptional circumstances candidates, by virtue of their training and experience may, at the discretion of the Programme Director and the Head of School, be deemed suitable for entry to the degree.

School of Public Health



Occupational Health

As part of UCC's commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD), modules available in the MSc in Occupational Health, the MSc in Occupational Health (Online) are offered as CPD modules in the College of Medicine and Health.

These modules are available for external individuals to attend as independent modules, having as target groups essentially: Health and Safety Professionals in Industry and Healthcare, Occupational Health Nurses, Self-employed Occupational Health and Safety Consultants, Human Resources Managers among others. These modules are also available to Healthcare Professionals - doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, allied healthcare professionals among others.

Candidates who satisfy the programme eligibility criteria may, subject to the approval of the Programme Director/Coordinator, be permitted to take the individual modules referred below, as part of UCC's commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and be provided with a relevant transcript of marks.


Entry requirements (for MSc Occupational Health and MSc Occupational Health (Online) modules):

Candidates for the following CPD modules must normally meet one of the following criteria:

1. An NFQ Level 8 honours primary degree (minimum second class honours, grade 2) in a relevant area, for example health-related (Public Health, Nursing, Medicine, Environmental Health, Psychology/Behavioural Science, Physiotherapy); Engineering and Human Resource Management and relevant professional experience¹ or work placement in an associated Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare area.

OR

2. A minimum of an NFQ Level 8 Diploma/Higher Diploma in Occupational Safety, Health and Welfare (minimum Second Class Honours, Grade 1), from UCC, or an equivalent qualification² from another Institution (NFQ Level 8 Diploma, minimum Second Class Honours, Grade 1) and a minimum of two years relevant professional work experience ¹ in an area associated with Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare;

OR

3. Applicants with a minimum of three years professional work experience in an associated area¹ of Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare may be invited for interview to satisfy the selection committee of their suitability for the programme.

¹ Relevant professional work experience, job title examples: Health and Safety Officers/Advisors/Managers/Coordinators; Environmental Safety Officers/Managers; Safety Engineers, Health Promotion Officers; HR Officers/Managers; Occupational Health Nurses, Health Scientists, Professional Trainers, Health and Safety Consultants.

² Level 8, Examples: Diploma/Higher Diploma/International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety; Diploma in Environment Management, Diploma in Health Promotion, Diploma in Learning, Development and Work-based Training.

Clinical Trials

Entry requirements (for modules from the MSc in Clinical Trials)

  1. Students are expected to hold an honours primary degree (NFQ Level 8), minimum second class honours grade 2, or equivalent, in a Science or health related discipline, or relevant subject area.
  2. The Clinical Trials modules are also open to registered health care professionals in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Allied Health care disciplines who may not have a primary degree. Such applicants must provide evidence of current registration with the relevant professional regulatory body in their country (e.g. the Irish Medical Council, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland etc. for Irish applicants).
  3. All applicants will be required to write a 500 word personal statement on why they wish to pursue a career in clinical trials.
  4. In exceptional circumstances, candidates with an honours primary degree (NFQ Level 8 or international equivalent) in an unrelated field, and who can demonstrate relevant experience in clinical research, may be considered for entry to the programme, subject to the approval of the programme team.
  5. Applicants may be asked to participate in an interview.
  6. In all cases, decisions will be based on qualifications and quality of application.
