Note: A native of Dublin, Michael Gorman was mortally wounded in Cork city late on Saturday night, 17 February 1923. He and two or three companions were walking down Albert Quay at about 11 p.m. At the spot where the Victoria Road turns off, a Free State sentry called on them to halt. Instead, they panicked and tried to run away. The sentry fired and hit Gorman in the back. He ‘died some time later. The body has been removed to the Mercy Hospital pending an inquiry.’ Gorman was a merchant seaman and served as a crew member on the SS. Carrigan Head, which was then lying on the Cork quays. See CE, 19 Feb. 1923. His death certificate spelled his surname as McIlgorm and gave his age as 42. The sentry who fired the fatal bullet was posted on Coberg Street. See Death Certificate (Cork Urban District No. 6, Union of Cork), 17 Feb. 1923.
