Note: Chalmers was one of three British soldiers killed in this IRA ambush near Waterfall on Bere Island. The Recorder of Cork later awarded £400 in compensation to the mother of Private Chalmers; the victim was said to have been ‘chased, captured, and shot’ while going with his comrades to the post office. Private Edwards (K.O.S.B.), seriously wounded at the same time, was awarded £600. See II, 18 Oct. 1921. Private Chalmers was from Lower Sydenham in London; he was interred in Ladywell Cemetery in the London borough of Lewisham.
