Note: Denis O’Sullivan ‘was killed by the Auxiliaries during reprisals for [the] Kilmichael ambush [of] Sunday, November 28, 1920. O’Sullivan, ‘who worked for Cronin’s, Cooldaniel, had gone by horse and cart on Monday [29 November 1920] to collect provisions for Cronin’s Provision Stores and Bar at Dromleigh. . . . He was having a drink, a reward for giving a lift to Mrs. Cotter, Johnstown Bar, when three truckloads of Auxiliaries, bent on revenge for the deaths of their comrades [in the Kilmichael ambush], arrived. Denny, who was not involved in any organisation, couldn’t answer their questions satisfactorily and he was taken out and shot. The soldiers went on to burn O’Mahony’s house across from Dromleigh School. . . . At the ambush site the Auxiliaries burned the Kelly and O’Donoghue houses. It was a frightening sequel to the ambush for the people of Kilmichael.’ In 2013 the Kilmichael Historical Society erected a plaque on the front wall of the Kilmichael Bar and Post Office to commemorate O’Sullivan’s killing.
