21st Annual Philip Monahan Memorial Lecture
The 21st Annual Philip Monahan Memorial Lecture was delivered by Fr Peter McVerry on 29 January, 2020, in Boole 4.
Each year the Department of Government and Politics hosts the prestigious public lecture to celebrate the memory of Philip Monahan. Monahan was Ireland's first local authority manager and served as City Commissioner and then City Manager in Cork from 1924 to 1959.
The lecture series was inaugurated in 1997 and has featured distinguished speakers such as Dr John Hume, Dr Mary McAleese and Vice Admiral Mark Mellett.
Professor O'Shea and Lord Mayor John Sheehan both spoke on the evening before Fr McVerry delivered his speech, discussing housing policy in Ireland and the ongoing homeless crisis, significant issues in the upcoming General Election of Saturday, 8 February.
