Discusses the concept of folklore and develops awareness of the different meanings it has had in different eras and places. Explores the intellectual origins of the discipline in key contexts.

Introduces the issue of gender to the study of folkloristics, popular culture and ethnology in general and develops an awareness of how gender has shaped research in the past.

Trad and Blues

Studies the relationship between music and culture and how music making is an essential part of traditional, folk and popular culture (traditional music in Ireland and Blues in North America).

Herbs and Healing

Semester 2

Wed 12noon – 2pm

Cost: €639

Examines a range of the most renowned herbs in Irish folklore, healing and herbalism and in doing this approach the study of Irish ethno-botany in a European context.
