Recognised School Leaving Qualifications

  • Esame di Stato (from 1999)
  • Diploma di Maturità (up until 1999)

These are acceptable for programmes up to 541 points.  For programmes over 541 points, applicants must also present satisfactory results in a cognate subject at the end of 1st year in a recognised 3rd level institution at the equivalent of level 8.

The exam must be from a Liceo of one of the following types:

  • Classica
  • Scientifica
  • Tecnica
  • Linguistica
  • Magistrale
  • Artistica

Note: Liceo Professionale not accepted.

University Requirements

Subject pass mark for University purposes:



Applicants must present a school report showing grades attained in each subject

Minimum Entry Requirements/Matriculation:

The minimum eligibility criteria follow. Proof of English proficiency is required in all cases. There may also be specific subject requirements for courses.

Level 8 2 H5 required Overall 60%, with 6 distinct recognised subjects taken over the final two years of higher secondary school      

English Language Competence:

The minimum acceptable level of English is 80% in the final year of school or equivalent English Language competence. Note applicants whose school-leaving examinations are more than two years old should present additional proof of English.

NB: School report showing subjects taken in final exams must be submitted – applicants will not normally be assessed in the absence of this.
Due to high numbers achieving max scores, and the fact that Italian Universities will often use matriculation/entry exams, for programmes over 541 points applicants must also present satisfactory results in a cognate subject in a university entrance exam or at end 1st year in a recognised 3rd level institution at a level equivalent to that of the programme applied for.
Note: for Science, Medicine, Dentistry and other Medical & Health programmes science-based matriculation is generally required.
Single Sitting: All subjects are examined at the same time and points are calculated based on a single sitting.
Bonus points for maths: Not applicable
