COVID-19 Research Student FAQs

 

The Graduate Studies Office would like to reassure all research students that we will do everything in our power to minimize the impact of the COVID-19 disruption on your studies. We have published a set of FAQs below, to address your questions and concerns, and we will update this page regularly as the situation evolves.

It is essential that you and your Supervisory Team establish communication and a routine for remote supervision during the University closure.

We are working remotely during the closure, and are available to respond to any query that you would like to raise with us directly. Please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be more than happy to provide all of the help that we can offer. Contact details are listed below.

 

Thesis Submission for Examination 

Can I still submit my intention to submit form?

 

Yes, intentions to submit will be processed in the normal way during the closure. Full instructions here

Can my Examiners be approved during the closure?

 

Yes, appointment of Examiners will be processed in the normal way, however we anticpate a possible delay in this process. 

I am due to submit on 3rd April 2020 but I need more time due to the University closure, can this be facilitated?

 

Yes, a no-cost extension to the July 3rd 2020 deadline, will be facilitated for all research students planning to submit on April 3rd 2020, and whose registration or 3-month grace-period will expire on 31 March 2020. This extension may be revised if the current situation changes. 

Can I still submit my thesis for Examination by 3rd April 2020 deadline?

 

Yes, the submission process is now electronic, and all submissions must be made online here. Please ensure to upload a Submission for Examination Form along with the thesis, even if all signatures have not been provided by the deadline. 

What if my Examiner(s) had requested a paper copy of my thesis? 

 

Examiners who have requested paper copies will be informed that they will receive electronic copies only during the closure. 

My viva voce is due to take place during the University closure i.e. before 29 March 2020. How will this be managed?

Will Examiner Reports be approved by the University during the closure? 

 

Yes, the Academic Council Graduate Studies Committee is equipped to approve recommendations remotely. 

Final Thesis Submission (post examination)

 

Will the University closure affect my conferring eligibility this summer 2020? The next deadline for final thesis submission is 6th May 2020, and all submissions must be made online via CORA. At present there are no plans to extend this deadline, however the University will be monitoring the situation closely and will update this page with relevant information. 

Registration 

 

 

My registration is due to expire at end of March, can I renew it as normal? 

 

Yes, all students will be able to log in to mystudentadmin and register as normal. If you have any problems with registering online please contact thesissubmission@ucc.ie 

Can I still apply for a leave of absence during the University closure? 

 

Yes, applications for leave of absence will be processed in the normal way. Instructions here. It is possible that there will be a delay in this process in some cases. 

Can I return from a leave of absence during the University closure?

 

Yes, you must email thesissubmission@ucc.ie to confirm your return to UCC. 

Can I submit a request for a change to my registration e.g. full-time/part-time, change of Supervisor, extension, change of thesis title. 

 

Yes, applications for changes to registration will be processed in the normal way. Instructions here. It is possible that there will be a delay in this process in some cases. 

How will assessment be facilitated for research training modules during the University closure? 

 

You must contact the Module Coordinator for advice on this.

Can I register for a research module for next semester? 

 

Yes, you can register in the normal way. Module registration is now online here.
