The Mature Student Office (MSO) offers a wide range of supports for mature students, some which are outlined below. The purpose of the Mature Student Office is to ensure that mature students have the support they need to complete their degree. As mature students have a wide range of issues that impact on them seperate from academic issues, the Mature Student Office deals with all kinds of problems! The Office is always happy to help mature students and we would encourage anyone with questions, problems or just if you're not certain, to come see us.
The MSO will provide tutoring for students on an individual basis where mature students are struggling with an area. Students must contact the MSO on 021 490 1873 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss the difficulties they are experiencing and to see how this can be best addressed. Where suitable, the MSO will organise one to one or group tutorials for students. These tutorials and the format they will take will be decided between the student, the tutor and the MSO. The closing date for students seeking tutorial support is April 13th 2017.
FLAIR- Focused Learning for Academic Insight and Research
The FLAIR Programme seeks to address practical skills required for mature students to complete their degree. There are 4 elements to the academic practical skills section, Unpacking the Question, Researching using a Concept - Centric Matrix, Essay Structure, and Presentation Skills. These elements are underpinned by necessary computer skills. The programme is student - centric and ensures that students are equipped to dive into their academic journey.

The Mature and Postgraduate Common Room is located in the ground floor of 4, Carrigside, College Road. The room is extremely popular among mature and postgraduate students. Registered students can make a cup of tea or coffee, read the paper, eat lunch, use the computers provided and catch up with other mature students during the opening hours.
Common Room Opening Times:
Monday to Thursday 8am - 7pm
Friday 8am - 4pm
The Common Room is open during Semester 1 & 2, study and exam weeks only. Excludes Public and Bank Holidays.
Kathy Bradley, Mature Student Learning Support Advisor, is available there on Tuesday mornings from 10-11, should you want to pop by for a chat.
Life Coaching is a future oriented opportunity that aims to help people when they feel stuck or want to bring about personal changes to their lives and work; to shift their perspective, reflect on their choices and realise their full potential. Coaching is a powerful relationship for people wanting to make these important changes in their lives and their careers. It is a relationship where the total focus is on the person and on what will help them achieve their goals. We are pleased to once again be able to offer mature students the opportunity to avail of life coaching sessions. These sessions are provided by a trainee life coach as part of their professional qualification. Students who have availed of this service in the past have regarded it as ‘particularly invaluable’.

Subject specific tutorials are provided for mature students, by the Mature Student Office, in certain subject areas. These areas include subjects such as:
1. Maths, Physics and Chemistry for students studying in the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science
2. Maths and Statistics for students studying in the College of Business and Law
3. Chemistry for students studying Pharmacy and Nursing.
The tutorials are known as Pre PAL clinics and students are informed of the tutorials when they are available.
Tutorials in Exam preperation will be provided in both semesters. Details will be posted once they are available.
The MSO has an open door policy. Students can contact the office via email, phone or just drop in. We can help students by putting them in touch with the relevant support services within UCC, advocating on their behalf, providing them with information and, most importantly, listening.
It is important to note that the MSO is not a counseling service, rather staff in the office direct students to the appropriate services when required.
