Work in Progress
My main line of research into seva (service to humanity) continues. My Swami Vivekananda’s Legacy of Service (New Delhi: OUP, 2006) extends arguments touched on in The Ramakrishna Mission: The Making of a Modern Hindu Movement (2000). I am now embarking on a British Academy funded comparative study of seva in a range of contemporary Hindu movements.
Working on the Ramakrishna movement has also led me to explore its iconography (see both recent and forthcoming publications). My most recent project in this area has extended this interest to include a study of Vivekananda’s attitudes to Indian art (chapter currently under consideration). I am also in the process of completing an article on iconographic depictions of Swami Vivekananda with particular reference to his ‘Chicago Pose’.
