Description: This module will involve regular listening, speaking, reading and writing practice, translation activities, and the study of syntactic, morphological and functional aspects of contemporary texts in Spanish at B1 level (CEFR).

HS2008 BUSINESS & SOCIETY IN THE SPANISH-SPEAKING WORLD II (5 Credits)

Description: This module combines students’ knowledge of business and the Spanish-speaking world. A variety of Spanish-language case-studies, reports and articles will be used to simulate business environments. The content is delivered through Spanish.

The following is a list of options that are offered, conditioned by student demand and staff availability. Please ensure you are able to attend all classes for your chosen module (i.e. only choose options that do not clash with your other subject) and identify 2-3 back-up modules, in case any of your chosen modules are over-subscribed. If on-line registration demand exceeds available places, allocations will be determined based on a waiting list system, managed by the Head of Department, Dr Martín Veiga, ORB 1.54).

HS2009 CONTEMPORARY WRITING FROM SPAIN

Description: This course will examine some of the most relevant movements and authors of Spanish literature in the 20th and 21st Centuries. It will combine an examination of the literary and historical contexts in which this writing developed with a close analysis of a selection of texts by specific writers.

Description: The module explores the history of contemporary Hispanic theatre through examination of key authors, texts and trends in Spain and Latin America since the beginning of the twentieth century.

Description: The study of a sample selection of authors, texts and topics from a range of different periods and sociocultural contexts (including urban and rural environments and the culture of Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country), organised into three blocks: Myths of Iberian Identity (Don Juan, Carmen, the Black Legend); Monuments of Iberian Culture (focusing on canonical texts and authors); Narratives of Cultural Memory. This module will be primarily delivered in Spanish with supplementary materials provided in English.
HS2014 UNDERSTANDING LATIN AMERICA

Description: The study of a variety of topics relating to Central and South America, with analysis of texts of different genres produced in different periods of the twentieth century. These texts and cultural works will mainly be in Spanish, with supplementary materials provided in English.
HS2046 US LATINO LITERATURES

Description: The module examines the roots of the Chicano (Mexican American) Civil Rights movements in the US in the 1950s and 1960s. In class we will scrutinise how issues relating to identity and language have been explored in cultural production (fiction, poetry, theatre, essay writing) since that time. Module syllabus includes selected writings from Cherríe Moraga, Gloria Anzaldúa, Javier Zamora, Tomás Rivera, Rudolfo Anaya, Rodolfo Corky Gonzales, Helena María Viramontes, Lorna Dee Cervantes, Valeria Luiselli.

Description: The module examines key concepts necessary for the understanding of culture, society, art, and literature of the Renaissance and Baroque in Spain, such as the "conquest" of America, Reformation and Counter-Reformation, "desengaño," expulsion of "moriscos," "comedia nueva," and decline of the Empire. Module syllabus includes selected writings from Cristóbal Colón, Hernán Cortés, Bartolomé de las Casas, San Juan de la Cruz, Fray Luis de León, Teresa de Ávila, Garcilaso de la Vega, Luis de Góngora, Lope de Vega, Francisco de Quevedo.
HS2015 GENDER IN THE SPANISH GOLDEN AGE

Description: The module examines the construction of gender roles in Spanish Early Modernity. In class, we will discuss the one-sex model, prevailing since Classical Antiquity until the 18th century, and its philosophical and cultural implications for the definition of gender distinctions within a binary gender model. Similarly, students will be encouraged to reflect on the ways in which "deviations" from this binary model such as the "hermaphrodite," the "effeminate male," and the "manly woman" were portrayed in literature. Module syllabus includes selected writings from medical treatises of the age, Alfonso Martínez de Toledo, Luis de León, Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.

Description: The first part of the course will examine the sound systems of Spanish as it is spoken throughout the world, followed by some contrastive analysis of points that are of significant difficulty for English-speaking learners, or that differ widely from Spanish to English. The final part of the module will comprise a general introduction to Linguistics, including language acquisition, bilingualism (with particular reference to Spain's autonomous regions), language in society and language change. The course is delivered in English and in Spanish.
HS2057 CINEMA AND IDENTITY IN SPAIN AND LATIN AMERICA

Description: This module will explore the construction of different forms of identity in relation to a range of recent Spanish and Latin American films. It will examine key concepts in Film Studies, such as cinematic genre, spectatorship and representation and will develop the knowledge and skills for the review and analysis of film. A range of directors from Spain and Latin America will be studied.

Description: The first part of the course attempts, via a selection of texts by relevant authors such as Almeida Garrett and Eça de Queirós, to acquaint the student with the main political, social and cultural changes operated in 19th century Portugal. The second part of the course concentrates on the transition from Monarchy to Republic and on the period covering Salazar's dictatorship, whilst analysing the challenges imposed by the new post-colonial national reality.
