For students on any of the BA, BA International, BA World Languages and BSc International Business with Languages programmes, there are two pathways through First Year Spanish depending on whether you are a BEGINNER of the language or a non-BEGINNER:
Beginners take 15 credits as follows:
HS1101 First Year Spanish Language for Beginners (15 credits)

Core hours: Monday: 15:00 -17:00/ Wednesday: 12:00 - 13:00/Thursday: 10:00-11:00
Introductory Meeting: Monday 26th September 2022 at 15:00 in ELECT L2 (please check Canvas for further information).
This module comprises a language component, a Learning Journal & a Cultural Project. HS1101 is for beginners and works at levels A1 & A2 of the European Framework for Languages. Language content includes the study of Spanish grammar and the practice of communicative, oral and aural skills. The Cultural Project introduces aspects of Hispanic Culture, and the Learning Journal allows students to reflect on the language learning process.
Note: Students wishing to take Beginners' Spanish must have obtained a minimum Grade H4 in the Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) in another modern continental language or Irish, Latin or Greek OR evidence of competence equivalent to a minimum Grade H4 in a foreign language other than Spanish. Students who have studied Spanish at second level and obtained a Grade below H4 can also join the Beginners’ Spanish course.
Non-Beginners take 15 credits as follows:
HS1102 First Year Spanish Language for non- Beginners (10 credits)

Core hours: Wednesday 12:00-13:00 & Thursday 10:00-11:00
Groups will be assigned after the departmental introductory meeting.
Introductory Meeting: Monday 26th September 2022 at 15:00 in CONN J1 (please check Canvas for further information).
This module will cover grammar and vocabulary in addition to regular reading, writing, listening and speaking practice, in order to consolidate and advance students' Spanish skills to a B1+ level (CEFR). Note: Students wishing to take Non-Beginners' Spanish must have obtained a minimum Grade H4 in Spanish in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent).
HS1030 Introduction to Spanish and Latin American Studies (5 credits)

Core hours: Monday 15:00-17:00 in ORB 2.55 (S1); Monday 15:00 - 16:00 (ORB 2.12) and 16:00 - 17:00 WW6 (S2)
Groups will be assigned at the Initial Introductory Meeting for HS1102.
This module will provide an introduction to the languages, cultures, history and societies of the Hispanic world, as well as to key methods and concepts of literary, historical, cultural and linguistic analysis.
