Core Course

HS3001 Final Year Spanish Language (10 Credits)

Time: Core Hours: Monday 12:00 – 13:00, Thursday 11:00 – 12:00, one additional hour will be assigned at introductory class meeting.

Description: The course will involve regular practice in the skills of advance translation into and out of Spanish and advanced language learning in the four skills.

Introductory class meeting will take place on Monday 12th September at 12:00 in WGB G01, please check Canvas for further information.

 

The following is a list of options which will run next year, conditioned by student demand and staff availability. Please ensure you are able to attend all classes for your chosen module (i.e. only choose options that do not clash with your other subject) and identify 2-3 back-up modules, in case any of your chosen modules are over-subscribed. If on-line registration demand exceeds available places, allocations will be determined based on a waiting list system, managed by the Head of Department, Dr Martín Veiga (Office: ORB 1.54).

HS3004 TRANSLATING BUSINESS, CULTURE AND SOCIETY IN THE HISPANIC WORLD

Description: This course will examine aspects of contemporary business, culture and society in the Hispanic World - namely, Spain and its regions and Latin America - from a comparative, intercultural and translational perspective. The course is text, translation and project based, and requires students to work with a variety of print and digital media sources in order to develop the analytical, interpretive and research skills required to translate complex messages effectively between Spanish and English, with due attention to sociocultural context . Students will explore different ways of translating texts and analyse existing translations, in order to gain an understanding of the linguistic and cultural challenges of translation between Spanish and English in different sociocultural contexts.

 

HS3005 HISTORY AND SOCIETY IN SPANISH LITERATURE

Description: This course will analyse representations of history and social change in a selection of key Spanish literary works published between the late 19th and early 20th century. It will provide an exploration of decisive social and historical transformations occurred in Spain at the time and the way in which those changes are depicted in the literature of the period.

 

HS3007 ASPECTS OF TEACHING SPANISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE*

Description: This module will reflect upon general aspects of teaching and learning Spanish as a foreign language, including theoretical perspectives on learning a language, popular approaches and methods in language teaching, and teaching and learning of grammar.

*Priority will be given to students who achieved a 2.1 grade in 2nd year Spanish language.

 

HS3008 LINGUISTIC ASPECTS OF SPANISH AS A GLOBAL LANGUAGE*

Description: This module will examine sociolinguistic variation within Spanish as it is spoken both throughout the Hispanic world and further afield, exploring in greater detail relevant issues such as bilingualism, diglossia, translanguaging and Spanish-based pidgins and creoles. As part of this exploration, dialectal variation, comprising phonological, lexical and grammatical differences will be identified and discussed. The economics of language, the use of Spanish on the internet, the growth of Spanglish and the significance of the rapidly increasing Hispanic demographic in the U.S. will also comprise key points for discussion.

*This course is only available to students who completed HS2026 in Second Year OR BA World Languages students who completed WL1101 in First Year.

 

HS3010 STAGES OF EXILE IN HISPANIC THEATRE

Description: The module examines the diverse effects of exile, migration and diaspora on individuals and communities, exploring the ways in which the exile phenomenon questions and critiques mainstream national traditions and contributes to create and investigate new spaces for identity and community. Focusing in the first part on Spanish Republican Exile, we will examine its history from 1939 onwards, focusing on the causes of this twentieth-century diaspora, the different routes into exile, and the diverse experiences of the refugees according to geographical origin and destination, gender, class, age and cultural and political affiliations, as well as the different stages of exile and their representation and recovery in contemporary historical memory. In the second half, we will focus on more recent experiences of migration and diaspora and their representation in narrative, theatre and film. In the final part of the course, students will be expected to present their own mini research project on a chosen "stage" of exile.

 

HS3013 TEXT AND PERFORMANCE IN CONTEMPORARY IBERIA

Description: In this module, participants will examine a selection of key theatre texts by contemporary Spanish dramatists from the early twentieth century to the present. We will analyse how the selected plays are representative of trends and innovations in the contemporary Spanish stage. Throughout the course, we will work not only with the dramatic texts but also with documents illustrative of their performance histories, such as filmic or journalistic records, in order to contextualise the dialogue between writing and performance from a historical, cultural and theatrical perspective. Special attention will be paid to the ways in which theatre is disseminated and how commercial and/or political considerations can affect the trajectory of a dramatic text, from page to stage.

 

 

HS3014 SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE-SPEAKING ART WORLD(S)

Description: This module will examine the social relevance of visual creativity in the Americas and Portuguese-speaking Africa. After outlining the historical development of contemporary visual forms in both contexts, it will explore the role of art biennials, museums and cultural centres in shaping postcolonial Spanish and Portuguese-speaking contexts. This module will be primarily delivered in English with supplementary materials provided in Spanish and Portuguese.

Description: This course will examine in some depth different aspects of the Basque Country's political, social and cultural history. It will concentrate mainly on nineteenth and twentieth century cultural and political history, across the entire Basque-speaking region, as well as addressing contemporary cultural representations.

Please note that there are no pre-requisites for studying this module.

Description: This module will explore in some depth particular aspects of Catalan history and culture (especially the literary, political and artistic movements from the 19th century to the present day and their effects on the development of contemporary Catalan culture), using selected audiovisual, artistic, historical and literary texts in Catalan as the basis for exploration and discussion.

HS3025 GALICIAN CULTURAL STUDIES

Description: This course will provide an examination of some of the most relevant features of contemporary Galician culture. Starting with a detailed social and historical background, it will concentrate on the study of some key literary and filmic texts by major modern authors. It will also analyse the importance of cultural manifestations such as art and music in the shaping of today's Galicia.

 

HS3028 LOVE AND DESIRE IN THE SPANISH GOLDEN AGE

Description: This module explores cultural constructs such as "love" and "sex" as portrayed in literature and art from the 16th and 17th centuries. In class, we will discuss Platonic and Courtly renderings of these concepts prevailing in Spanish Renaissance and Baroque literature and art. Module syllabus includes selected writings from medical treatises of the age, Diego de San Pedro, Fernando de Rojas, Lope de Vega, San Juan de la Cruz, Teresa de Ávila.

 

HS3029 THE BODY AND SENSES IN THE SPANISH GOLDEN AGE

Description: This module explores the body as explained by Early Modern medical discourse, in conjunction with the symbolic nuances that different parts and organs of the body acquire in Renaissance and Baroque literature. The module is divided into four thematic units focused on specific parts of the human body. Through these, we will discuss topics such as: poetic fragmentation as a replica of medical dissection, the metaphor of the body-politic, digestion as metaphor for reading and incorporation of sources, the problem of seeing in a world understood to be governed by appearances, the metaphor of evacuation and purge, and sexual deviance in Early Modernity. Module syllabus includes selected writings from medical treatises of the age, Garcilaso de la Vega, Lazarillo de Tormes, Baltasar del Alcázar, Lope de Vega, Miguel de Cervantes, Ana Caro, Luis de Góngora, Francisco de Quevedo.

 

HS3054 GENDER, VIOLENCE AND POWER ON THE US-MEXICAN BORDER

Description: Since its inception in 1848, the US-Mexico border has been singled out as an area of fascinating cultural interest. It has also been characterized by high levels of violence played out on both sides. This module examines cultural expressions of that violence with a particular focus on the past twenty years during which time there has been a prolonged drug war involving many young male victims as well as sustained violence against women exemplified most forcefully by the phenomenon of the 'femicides' or murders of young women in Ciudad Juárez. In that regard the evolving construction of both masculinity and femininity in the border context is of interest in assessing and evaluating the relationship between violence and power in the region. This module will examine a range of cultural responses to violence along the border including documentary film, art and literature.

 

HS3058 HUMAN RIGHTS, MEMORY AND THE POST-DICTATORSHIP GENERATION IN THE SOUTHERN CONE

Description: This module will explore the legacy of human rights violations that occurred mainly under dictatorship in the Southern Cone in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s focusing on the second-generation, those who were born or grew up under dictatorial rule and became protagonists in the struggles for memory, truth and justice in the post-dictatorships. After a general introduction to the topic of human rights violations in Latin America, the module will explore state-terrorism's legacy and impact in contemporary Chile, Argentina and Uruguay, taking memory as the key theoretical framework to explore activism, cultural production and commemoration emanating from a wide range of second generation individuals and groups, including the children of those who were disappeared, imprisoned and forced into exile.

Description: The course takes as its starting point the early days of modernism in Portugal and the experimental movements, Paúlismo, Interseccionismo, Futurismo and Sensacionismo. These movements have in common a concern with identity along with the fragmentation of the self, concepts which are central to Pessoa's work. The course will focus on Pessoa's poetry but consideration will also be given to his semi-autobiographical novel, Livro do Desassossego'. The course will also include study of his contemporaries Almada Negreiros and Sá Carneiro.

 

 

PU3303 CONTEMPORARY BRAZILIAN CULTURE

Description: This course will examine the historical construction of Brazilian identity from the post-Conquest period onwards with reference to its relationship to discourses on Latin American identity formation, through Independence and 'indigenismo' and twentieth century experiences of dictatorship and democracy. The second section of the course will focus particularly on textual representations of Brazilianness with particular reference to cinema, literature and theatre.

LL3002 TRAVEL WRITING

Description: This module examines the theory and practice of travel writing. Students will read a set of texts (in English and in English translation) that range from literature of the nineteenth century to contemporary writing. We will be looking at writers who have travelled to such places as Italy, Spain, North Africa and the Middle East, among others. We will consider issues such as the nature of the genre, the relationship between writing and travelling, and the conceptualization of foreign cultures.

 

LL3102 EUROPEAN CULTURAL CAPITALS

Description: Europe has often had a notional capital - a dominant cultural centre. At the same time, there have always been important, diverse roles for a range of cities across the continent. This course aims to look at the idea of a cultural capital, from Rome to the annual EU award of the title, and to explore in more detail the cultural productions and contexts around a particular city at a given point in history.
