CIWEM Presidential Induction (Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management )
On the 12th September, David McHugh of Fehiley Timoney was inaugurated as the 33rd President of the institution, the first Irish-based President of the Institution. The evening included an address by Professor Jerry D Murphy, Chair and Professor of Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering at University College Cork, Director of the Science Foundation Ireland MaREI centre and Biogas Task Leader for the International Energy Agency Bioenergy.
Prof. Murphy gave an overview of the MaREI centre and the holistic approach adopted to energy, climate and marine including for societal perspectives and climate dialogue. Prof. Murphy’s address included a state of the art perspective on green gas including renewable hydrogen from intermittent renewable electricity and biomethane from treatment of organic wastes and highlighted the importance of circular bioeconomy systems in decarbonising agriculture, electricity, heat, industry, waste management and transport systems. The event was very well attended, with representatives from the CIWEM Board travelling from the UK and many industry and academic supporters from the Cork region.
