Under current development plans, wind generation will sometimes exceed total demand for power on the Irish system by 2020, particularly in wintertime when the wind is strongest. This excess wind power can be exported via interconnectors to Great Britain, curtailed (i.e. rejected) or stored.

The Irish Transport Research Network held its largest ever annual conference this year in University College Cork. The conference was co-hosted by the University of Limerick and Cork Institute of Technology. Members of ITRN include Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, NUI Galway, Dublin Institute of Technology and University of Ulster, Jordanstown.

Green Week is the biggest annual conference on European environment policy. This year's event will take place from 22 to 25 May in Brussels. This year's theme is "Water".
UCC's pioneering undergraduate degree in Energy Engineering is the most sought-after course of its type in the country. The first group of students to reach the final year are to present results from their research projects on Tuesday 6th March from 2-4pm in the foyer of the Electrical Engineering building. This is the culmination of several months of hard work from all the Energy Engineering final year students at UCC.
UCC's Sustainable Energy Research Group is a partner with nine other European institutions in the stoRE project, examining non-technical barriers to developing energy storage in Europe. The project will run until May 2014 and will aim to provide best practice guidance to energy storage developers across Europe. stoRE has been awarded funding under the EU's Intelligent Energy Europe programme. Paul Leahy and Eamon McKeoghwill lead UCC's contribution to stoRE.
