Science for All 2017

Sharing Science without the Jargon at UCC

Would you like to know more about your microbes or solar energy or the alien plants in our rivers and lakes?

These are just some of the exciting talks about cutting edge science which will be battling it out to win 1st place at the UCC Science for All Final Competition on the 5th of April. 

The final takes place in University College Cork’s Western Gateway Building lecture theatre G05 at 6.15pm on Wednesday, 5th April. All are welcome and admission is free. 

The science communication competition, now in its 13th year, challenges young scientists to share the excitement of their research with the general public in an easily understandable manner, without using jargon.

Postgraduate Study in Microbiology

Our Mission:
to perform leading-edge research in the discipline of Microbiology and to train graduates for productive and rewarding scientific careers.

  • MSc Bioinformatics with Systems Biology in association with Mathematical Science and Computer Science & Information Technology
  • MSc Food Microbiology
  • MSc Biotechnology in association with Biochemistry, Chemistry and Process Engineering, Pharmacy and Biological, Earth & Environmental Science
  • MSc in Molecular Cell Biology with Bioinnovation - in association with Biochemistry, Neuroscience and Business Information Systems


We have very strong PhD and MSc training programmes with approx. 80 postgraduate students supporting and driving research across food, medical and environmental microbiology. Our PhD students are drawn from UCC, other Irish 3rd level institutions and includes a significant number of international students (approx. 20%).

We perform internationally competitive research across the major sub disciplines of Microbiology i.e. Health, Food and Environment. The scope, quality and impact of our research output places us at the forefront of microbiological research worldwide.
