Summer Bursaries for Undergraduate Students

The College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) are providing funding for ten summer research bursaries for undergraduate students in the various academic units within SEFS, in accordance with the following guidelines. The bursaries are to provide €2000 for an 8 week summer research project. This will enable the successful students to participate in research work during the summer period. Bursaries will be distributed as follows:

  1. Engineering (including Architecture) & Computer Science, 2nd year students
  2. Food Science and Nutritional Science Programmes, 2nd year students
  3. Life Sciences and BEES Programmes, 3rd year students
  4. Mathematical Sciences, Chemistry and Physics, 3rd year students.

Only students in the indicated year above, for each research area, will be eligible to apply. All eligible undergraduate students are invited to look for projects that interest them in the collated list contained in this document: SEFS-Bursaries . The onus is on you to make contact with the corresponding supervisor(s) to get more information and discuss the possibility of carrying out the indicated research project under supervision. There will be no restriction on the projects for which students in a particular Department or School can apply, as long as they have an appropriate background for the project.

Guidelines

The application must include

  1. your CV (no longer than two pages), including your complete 3rd level academic record to date, with years marks indicated both as a fraction of the total possible mark (e.g. 890/1200, 783/1000) and as a percentage (74.2%, 78.3%);
  2. a short statement explaining why you wish to carry out a summer research project (no more than 300 words in length); and
  3. a prioritized list of up to three proposed research projects, each accompanied by the signature of the corresponding supervisor, indicating their agreement to supervise you for that particular project.

Please return the completed application to Teresa Dwan at t.dwan@ucc.ie on or before 12 noon on 16 March 2012.

The student applications within each award category (Engineering, Architecture & Computer Science; Food and Nutritional Sciences; Life Sciences and BEES; Mathematical Sciences, Chemistry and Physics) will be assessed by the SEFS Teaching Learning and Student Experience Committee, based on the applicants' academic records, CVs and personal statements. The applications deemed to be strongest will be identified and allocated a bursary. (Notification to students initially allocated bursaries: 22 March).

The successful applicants will be notified and requested to confirm their intent to participate in the proposed summer research project. (Deadline for successful applicants to confirm their participation: 27 March).

Once confirmation of participation has been received or the bursary allocations have been reallocated if necessary, a final list of students allocated bursaries and the projects on which they will be working will be announced. (Announcement of final list - students allocated bursaries and their projects: 30 March).

A one page report about the outcomes and results of the summer research project must be submitted by you and your supervisor(s) after the project is completed. (Deadline for submission of final reports from the students and supervisors: 14 September).

Time scale for the procedures indicated above for 2012 is as follows:

  1. Deadline for submission of applications by undergraduate students: 12 noon on 16 March
  2. Review of applications by the TLSE Committee: 20 March
  3. Notification of students initially allocated bursaries: 22 March
  4. Deadline for successful applicants to confirm their participation: 27 March
  5. Announcement of final list - students allocated bursaries and their projects: 30 March
  6. Deadline for submission of final reports from the students and supervisors: 14 September
