The John W. G. Buckley Prize for Academic Excellence in Computer Science

In honour of UCC alumnus John William Gerard Buckley, the School of Computer Science & Information Technology wishes to establish a set of prizes for the BSc Computer Science students who achieve the highest mark annually in 2nd, 3rd and 4th years, respectively.
Each of the three annual prizes will take the form of a monetary sum of €1000. These are sponsored by John's widow, Jill Ahern.
John graduated with a B.Sc. in Computer Science with Mathematics from UCC in 1984. He then completed a M.Sc. by Research in Computer Science, in which he conducted research on the then nascent topic of computer networks, writing a thesis entitled "The design and implementation of an OSI session service". This was followed in 1998 with an MBA on Technology Management from the Open University.
John joined Lilly in 1987 as an IT professional, then becoming the department head of IT and Director of IT for Europe. He was promoted further to the Business Leader for HR and IT role where he was part of the senior leadership team in Lilly. In this position, John focused on developing leadership pathways within the Kinsale site and Lilly US. John passed away in 2013.
Eligibility
Current UCC students registered in Years 2, 3 and 4 of the BSc in Computer Science (CK401)
Selection
Students achieving the highest mark in Years 2, 3 and 4 of the BSc in Computer Science at the Spring Examination Board.
If multiple students have the same highest mark then each student receives the Award and the monetary value will be divided equally between them.
