The Irish Institute of Korean Studies, University College Cork, is offering one scholarship in Korean Studies which will cover the amount of the first two years of PhD fees for EU students (€5,770 per annum (subject to change) for either EU or International students; please note that international students will have to pay the balance of International fees).

*The successful recipient must apply also for other, equivalent scholarships for which they are eligible, i.e. the Irish Research Council GOI Postgraduate Scholarship, Korea Foundation Fellowship etc., in the second year of doctoral study to support the remainder of their PhD Studies.

** In exceptional circumstances a third year of EU fees may be awarded, subject to performance and peer review.

The Scholarship is for PhD research on a topic in the areas of Korea’s Intellectual History or Contemporary Korean Society. To be considered, applicants must have a minimum of a BA (or equivalent) in Korean/Asian Studies or other relevant disciplines, and have achieved at least a Second Class Honours, Grade 1 (i.e. 2H1 or equivalent). They must also have a Masters in Korean Studies. Applicants should be able to provide evidence of a high level of written and spoken Korean (and/or Classical Chinese for research purposes) and be able to demonstrate such abilities.

The successful applicant would be supervised by Dr Kevin Cawley along with another academic advisor in the University and will commence the doctoral degree during the next academic year starting in September 2023.

Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed, either in person or via Skype.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  1. Applicants must have at least Second Class Honours (Grade 1) or equivalent in their first or subsequent degree, and must also have a Masters in Korean Studies.
  2. Applications are invited from students who will commence a PhD (or PhD Track) programme in September 2023. The successful applicants will subsequently have to apply through PAC. The award of the scholarship is contingent on the student being accepted to the PhD (or PhD Track)
  3. Applicants should include relevant supporting materials and non-returnable transcripts of their academic record. Graduates of University College Cork do not need to supply transcripts. Applicants should obtain two letters of support for their application. Application materials should be submitted both electronically and in hard copy.
  4. Applications will not be assessed if they are incomplete or have been received after the advertised closing date.
  5. Shortlisted candidates may be asked to interview via Skype or in person. The award of the scholarship(s) will only take place if there are candidates of sufficient merit who have feasible research topics of academic value.
  6. The Scholarship holder must submit annual reports to the PhD supervisor. If the progress reports are deemed unsatisfactory, the student will not be permitted to continue with the PhD.
