This year, the HR Conference was on ‘Researcher Mobility’. Ironically, during the academic year 2016-2017 we lost two very valuable UCCRSA Committee members, Dr Andrew Allen and Dr Shane Hegarty to other institutions. However, we would like to wish them both every success in their new roles, and we hope to continue to link with them through RSA networks into the future.

·        Dr Shane Hegarty recently secured a research fellow post at the Harvard Medical School, Boston Children's Hospital. He was previously employed as a Post-Doctoral Researcher by Dr. Barry Boland in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, UCC, and then as an IRC and NUI Post-Doctoral Research Fellow under the supervision of Dr Gerard O'Keeffe and Professor Aideen Sullivan in the Dept. of Anatomy and Neuroscience, UCC,  where he carried out neuroscience research related to neurodegenerative diseases. During this time, he acted as a part-time lecturer in Dept. of Anatomy and Neuroscience, UCC, and from 2016 he was appointed as a Lecturer in this Dept. He has received a number of awards including the prestigious Neuroscience Ireland ‘Early Career Investigator Award’ which recognises an ‘outstanding researcher’ in the field. He was recently coveted by UL, and then Harvard University Medical School where he will engage in the School’s Research and Lecturing programmes. Shane’s colleagues and UCCRSA committee joined in a farewell meeting in the ‘Deep South’ bar to acknowledge his huge contribution to UCCRSA, and we wish Shane continued success into the future.
