Dr Seán McCarthy appointed as Adjunct Professor

23 May 2019

The Office for the Vice President for Research & Innovation (OVPRI) is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Seán McCarthy as an Adjunct Professor who will work closely with the UCC Research Support Services (RSS) team.

Seán is a UCC graduate with a BE (1980), M.Eng.Sc (1982) and a PhD (1986) from the NMRC (now Tyndall). He has been immersed in European research in many different roles, including as a researcher, research manager, research group leader, and company director. In 1988, Seán established Hyperion Ltd., which focuses on the interface between researchers and European funding.

Seán is a leading expert on European research funding programmes and specialises in the design of training courses for researchers right across the continent, including in 74 of Europe’s top 100 Universities and Research Centres. He was presented with the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators Professional Recognition Award in 2017 to acknowledge his 'outstanding contribution to the research management and administration profession'.

Over the course of his 3-year appointment, Seán will work with the UCC RSS team and with the wider research community providing expert support for a number of initiatives including:

•         Developing UCC’s Horizon Europe Strategy: This strategy will focus on positioning UCC to engage effectively at the European Commission policy level and ensure optimal alignment of institutional priorities with Commission research funding priorities. Specific actions will include maximising the competiveness of UCC-led proposals, increasing the proportion of UCC researchers that engage with EU funding programmes and broadening the diversity of programmes with which we engage.

•         Training and upskilling Research Officers throughout the UCC to maximise the effectiveness of UCC’s research support infrastructure.

•         Assisting in the development and delivery of innovative training programmes for UCC’s research community and ensuring that these supports are tailored to the needs of different cohorts of researchers. This will include the delivery of a mentorship programme focused on early career researchers.

Supporting Strategic Action 2 of UCC’s Research & Innovation Strategic Plan (2017-2022), these activities will serve to strengthen existing research supports, as well as develop new and innovative supports that empower UCC researchers to achieve their ambitions and nurture the next generation of Research Leaders.

Welcoming his appointment by the College of SEFS, Professor Anita Maguire, Vice President for Research & Innovation, commented “Enhanced engagement between Seán and the UCC research community will no doubt lead to improved competitiveness of UCC-led proposals and help position the institution for success in Horizon Europe”.
