Double success for Professor Helen Whelton
Professor Helen Whelton awarded two prestigious prizes.
Professor Whelton received the 2019 Distinguished Scientist H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award and the 2019 International Association for Dental Research (IADR) E.W Borrow Memorial Award at the opening ceremonies of the 97th General Session and Exhibition of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research and the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, in Vancouver, Canada in June.
Professor Whelton is Head of the College of Medicine and Health at UCC, Chief Academic Officer for the HSE South/Southwest Hospital Group and served as the 90th President of IADR from 2013-14. Professor Whelton's research focuses on fluoride and health services research, including leading multiple regional and national oral health surveys and contributing to the development of agendas for dental research in both developing and developed countries to monitor oral health among their populations. Professor Whelton also leads several interdisciplinary research projects dealing with the interrogation of large oral health services databases and is now researching areas such as obesity and women’s general health issues.
The IADR Distinguished Scientist H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award, which consists of a monetary award and plaque, is bestowed for meritorious research in epidemiology and public health and is one of the highest honours bestowed by IADR. The IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award, which also consists of a monetary award and plaque, recognizes and stimulates research in oral health prevention for children. It is an exceptional achievement, and reflective of her outstanding work, to win both awards.
