UCC hosts the 2019 Annual International Workshop on UI GreenMetrics
UCC played host to the 2019 Annual International Workshop on UI GreenMetrics which addressed the theme of “Sustainable University in a Changing World: Lessons, Challenges and Opportunities.”
UCC was privileged to welcome over 100 international delegates from 30 different countries across the globe to this important event. Delegates attended sessions over the course of three days, included a steering group meeting of national coordinators (UCC is the Irish national coordinator) to discuss the strategic framework of the Green Metric network and a full day of parallel sessions where delegates presented their activities and achievements on their campuses.
Speaking at the opening plenary session, An Tánaiste, Mr Simon Coveney who opened the International workshop called on all universities to encourage and challenge each other do better, to look at innovation and to set example to all other institutions in the fight towards sustainability. Key note speaker Dr Ger Mulally commented “although the sustainability challenge ahead remains great, success and recognition in rankings such as this, identify areas of improvement which ensure Universities are not just institutions of learning but are learning institutions”.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings globally ranks universities for their sustainability on campus across several categories, including climate change, energy and water conservation, waste recycling, and green transportation. It is an initiative of Universitas Indonesia which was launched in 2010.
UCC has achieved 9th place in the global sustainable campuses in the 2018 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, this is UCC’s second year holding the position of 9th in the international rankings.
