UCC becomes signatory to Magna Charta Universitatum

On 16 September 2022, UCC became a signatory of Magna Charta Universitatum. This charter was originally signed by 388 rectors and heads of universities on the nine-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the University of Bologna in 1988.

It confirms the principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy which are believed by its signatories to be fundamental to the university and which are often under threat.  The charter also acknowledges the responsibility of universities to engage with and to respond to the aspirations and challenges of the world and to the communities that they serve to benefit humanity and contribute to sustainability. The updated 2020 version of the charter can be found here: http://www.magna-charta.org/magna-charta-universitatum/mcu-2020

Academic Council and Governing Body had endorsed the application and UCC received letters of support from Irish and European universities. The charter was signed by UCC’s Academic Secretary, Paul O’Donovan, at a conference and signing ceremony at the University of Bologna. UCC also becomes a member of the Magna Charta Observatory which monitors the status of institutional autonomy and academic freedom worldwide in cooperation with organisations such as the EUA, the Council of Europe and UNESCO.
