Dr. Seán Millar is a research support officer and post-doctoral researcher in the School of Public Health at UCC. Seán’s PhD research examined anthropometric measures and diagnostic tests with regard to their utility for assessing cardiometabolic risk and detecting patients with type 2 diabetes in general practice. Dr. Millar was also the representative for the Irish Health Research Board (HRB) Centre for Health and Diet Research at the BioSHaRE data harmonisation consortium.

Since completing his PhD, Seán has taken up position in the School of Public Health as a research support officer at the Irish focal point of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) at the HRB, where he is responsible for the preparation of annual reports detailing the prevalence of illicit substance use in Ireland, harms and harm reductions related to drug use and substance abuse in Irish prisons. He is also a regular contributor to Drugnet Ireland, the quarterly newsletter of the Alcohol and Drug Research Unit of the HRB.

Dr. Millar has been involved in a number of post-doctoral research positions within the School. The safefood funded Lifetime Cost of Childhood Overweight and Obesity project represented the Irish contribution to a larger pan-European Joint Action on Nutrition and Physical Activity (JANPA) project. The overall aim of the JANPA project was to contribute to halting the rise of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents by 2020. Dr. Millar was also employed as a researcher as part the HRB Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement (ICE) Awards.

Among Seán’s current post-doctoral responsibilities in the School of Public Health are data management of the Mitchelstown Cohort Rescreen. This six year follow-up study represents a valuable resource to additionally test a range of hypotheses relevant to disease prediction. Current research interests focus on obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic disease risk assessment.
