Myrtle Allen Annual Memorial Lecture

The first of an annual series of lectures in honour of Myrtle Allen took place, in line with the launch of UCC's Postgraduate Diploma in Irish Food Culture in Adult Continuing Education and the Department of Folklore and Ethnology

On 9 May 2019, organised by Regina Sexton, tribute was paid to the late Myrtle Allen in  the first annual Myrtle Allen Memorial Lecture. Speakers included one of the most respected food writers in the world, Claudia Roden, the Michelin star chef, Ross Lewis and John McKenna, McKennas’ Guides. They spoke of their experience of Myrtle and her influence, ahead of her times.

Michelin Star winnder Myrtle Allen received an honorary degree from UCC in the year 2000. She kept meticulous records and journals from the restaurant, daily menus, inherited hand-written family manuscript recipe books, correspondence with producers and chefs, restaurant and hotel reviews, and scrapbooks of traditional recipes sent to her by readers of the Irish Farmers Journal. 

Her detailed research on the importance of high quality home grown produce and memoirs have been acquired by UCC and will be stored in the Boole Library.

This lecture was launched in line with the launch of UCC’s unique Postgraduate Diploma in Irish Food Culture in Adult Continuing Education and the Department of Folklore and Ethnology.
