Clinical Pledge Ceremony at the Aula Maxima

17 Jan 2023

On Tuesday 17 January, Professor John O’Halloran, UCC President, delivered the Welcome Address at the Cork University Dental School and Hospital’s Clinical Pledge Ceremony in the historic Aula Maxima.

The Clinical Pledge Ceremony marks the development of UCC’s dental students in aspects of clinical and professional practice and the event highlights the importance of professionalism and the responsibility that comes with being a dental practitioner. The dentistry profession is guided by a moral code of the Hippocratic Oath upon which the pledge is based, aligning concepts of academic integrity, policies and processes, with teaching and learning practices.

UCC engages students in a distinctive education, where the curriculum is visibly linked to employability. Our success is focused on positive student outcomes in education and employability and our dental students are provided with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are highly sought by dental practitioners.

By the nature of your training and qualifications, you are being entrusted with very special responsibilities. Society, as well as future generations of dentists, will look to you for leadership. Today is a day for celebration. However, we must balance this with the seriousness of the responsibility which is entrusted to you. We would like you all to become professionals who can enter the global society, of whom University College Cork can say “we are proud of you”. Congratulations to you all, and my very best wishes to you.
