CHAPTER 1
Bord na Gaeilge

  1. There shall be established in the University, Bord na Gaeilge (“An Bord”).
  2. The duties of An Bord shall be :
    1. to make proposals to the Governing Body in relation to the provision of courses which include instruction through Irish leading to university degrees or other distinctions of the University, in subjects or disciplines in which such instruction is already provided through English.
    2. To make proposals to the Governing Body in relation to the establishment of courses of instruction through Irish in areas or disciplines in which courses are not provided through English.
    3. To make proposals to the Governing Body in relation to the provision of adequately trained staff who will be capable of conducting and teaching such courses through Irish.
    4. To make proposals to the Governing Body in relation to extending and improving the use of Irish in the University generally. Commentary : These terms of reference are unchanged from the original terms of reference set down for An Bord in Statute 95 in 1973
  3. An Bord shall report to the Governing Body and shall forward a written report to the Governing Body at least annually. The Governing Body shall consider the views of the Academic Council on all proposals made to it by An Bord.
  4. An Bord shall consist of :
    1. the President or his/her nominee;
    2. the Registrar or his/her nominee;
    3. all holders of Professorships in the Irish Language by whatever title known;
    4. Oifigeach na Gaeilge of the University’s Students’ Union;
    5. two members elected by the Governing Body;
    6. two members elected by the Academic Council;
    7. one representative elected by each of the Colleges of
      1. Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences;
      2. Business and Law;
      3. Medicine and Health;
      4. Science, Engineering and Food Science;
    8. not more than two members who shall be co-opted by the members in categories (a) to (g).

    Those members in categories (a), (b), (c) and (d) shall be ex officio members of An Bord.

    Commentary : The membership of An Bord has been changed previously by Statute 140 and by Statute D. Previous changes were initiated to take cognisance of changes to the Chairs in Irish and their titles and in the most recent Statute [D] to significantly expand the number of co-opted members.

  5. The proceedings of An Bord shall be conducted through the medium of Irish. Reports to Governing Body and Academic Council shall be in both Irish and English.

    Commentary : It is the intention that the business of An Bord will be conducted through Irish, including discussion, minutes etc. Report to Governing Body and Academic council will be in both languages.

  6. An Bord shall establish such and so many sub-committees as it deems necessary for the proper fulfillment of its terms of reference as herein set forth.

    Commentary : This section is necessary to allow An Bord to set up sub-committees to progress particular projects or initiatives, for instance, Institiúid na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge.

  7. The term of office of the elected members of An Bord shall be contemporaneous and co-terminus with the term of office of the Governing Body.

    Commentary : The term of office was previously specified in Statute as three years.

  8. Statute 95, Chapter i, of University College Cork, as already amended is hereby further amended as follows : (a) By the deletion of Sections 1 to 6.

    Commentary : The provisions of Statute 95, Chapter 1, sections 1-6 are reflected in this re-draft along with the changes necessary to update the membership, term of office etc.

    Sections 7 and 8 of Statute 95 remain operative as these removed the requirements placed on candidates for Professorships or Lectureships to furnish evidence of their capacity to carry out the duties of their office through the medium of the Irish language.

  9. Statute 140, Chapter ii, of University College Cork, is hereby amended as follows:
    (a) By the deletion of Sections 1 and 2 of Chapter 11.

    Commentary : Statute 140, Chapter 2, revised the membership and term of Office of An Bord.

  10. Statute D, Chapter II, of University College Cork – National University of Ireland, Cork, is hereby deleted

    Commentary : This was the most recent revision of the membership.
