CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) Milling Machine
On Tuesday the 9th of June, UCC Physics ushered in a new era of machining with the delivery of a much-needed CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) milling machine. This new machine is faster and more capable than that of its predecessor, which was operated entirely by manually turning dials and handwheels.
A milling machine is a subtractive manufacturing method whereby material is moved around a cutter to form the desired shape. This can be time consuming when multiple parts are needed. The CNC can reduce the time it takes to produce a finished article while also improving accuracy.
It is hoped that this machine will significantly reduce outsourcing and provide greater control over the production of components. It will be commissioned in the coming weeks and it is hoped it will be operational soon after. Its impact will be felt in all of the existing experimental research labs as well as any that will be established in the future.
The machine, an OptiMill F80, was supplied by Millennium Machinery, based in County Longford. They were a pleasure to work with and provided Crowley Engineering with comprehensive information and support ahead of the delivery date.
Crowley Engineering executed the installation plans which were managed and overseen by Rob Sheehan, who ensured everything ran smoothly from start to finish on the delivery day. While on site, the team also removed an old manual milling machine from the workshop, which has since found a new home in Ballincollig!
The Buildings and Estates team also played a key role in supporting the installation. To ensure a clear pathway for the machine to be wheeled through the building, they arranged for the temporary removal and subsequent replacement of six doors, as well as a number of lights and fire alarm units located along the corridor.
This marks a significant boost for the School of Physics. With much of the funding secured through SEFS and the remainder provided by contributions from several research groups from within the School. The new machine is a valuable addition to the available facilities and is expected to play an important role in supporting research and teaching labs, producing high-quality components for many years to come.
