EPONA presents: A Space to Inspire: Cosmic Stories

On the 4th of March at 6.30pm in G05, Western Gateway Building, UCC, three distinguished women in STEM will visit UCC to speak about their experiences and achievements in the world of physics and science. The event is open to all. The confirmed speakers are: 

Dame Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell:
Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell is a distinguished astrophysicist from Northern Ireland. In 1967, she codiscovered radio pulsars. This is considered “one of the most significant scientific achievements of the 20th century”. In 2018 she was awarded with the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. She has received countless awards and honours during her academic career.

Dr Niamh Shaw:
Doctor Niamh Shaw is an award-winning communicator in STEM, performer, engineer, scientist and writer. Her life mission is to get to space as an artist and communicator. Niamh Shaw is one of Ireland’s leading science communicators.

Professor Denise Gabuzda:
Professor Denise Gabuzda is a professor in UCC who specialises in radio astronomy. She has spent career studying galactic nuclei with VLBI.
The event is an excellent opportunity for those interested in STEM. The talk will provide a chance to learn about the stories of three experienced and qualified figures in the world of science, and to celebrate international women’s day.

University College Cork’s EPONA committee is a network aimed at promoting gender equality and equal opportunities, with the goal of fostering a more inclusive culture within the UCC Physics Department. EPONA hosts regular events with the overall aim of making the world of physics a more equal and accessible environment.

This event is kindly supported by the Institute of Physics in Ireland. The IOP are a leading scientific society promoting physics and bringing physicists together for the benefit of all.
