Günther Eissner is currently holding the Chair of Translantional Systems Biology at Systems Biology Ireland, University College Dublin (UCD), and he is appointed Professor at the UCD School of Medicine & Medical Science. Günther previously was Professor of Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Research at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Munich University Medical Centre, Munich, Germany (2008-2013). He graduated from the Philipps-University of Marburg, Germany with a PhD in Human Biology. After his PhD thesis in the Dept. of Immunology at the University of Munich, he postdoced at the Institute for Clinical Molecular Biology, Helmholtz Centre Munich, where he advanced to become a group leader working on endothelial cell biology and inflammation. In 2000, he was awarded the prestigious Heisenberg Fellowship from the German Reseach Foundation (DFG), and moved to the University of Regensburg to head the Lab for Experimental Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation. In 2003 he graduated as Consulting Immunologist of the German Society for Immunnology (DGfI). Günther also served as Senior Vice President and Head of Biolgical Research of the Italian pharmaceutical company Gentium, Sp.A, Villa Guardia (CO), Italy, 2004-2007. His work on the prophylactic use of the company’s lead product Defibrotide contributed to clinical studies and the EMA approval for the prevention and treatment of veno-occlusive disease following allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Günther’s major research focus lies on endothelial and mesenchymal stem cells in transplant medicine and oncology. He has given more than 50 invited lectures, and has authored or co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), of the International Placenta Stem Cell Society (IPLASS), and of the German Society of Immunology (DGfI).
