UCC Symposium examines trends in the Pharmaceutical Industry
Over 80 delegates from within the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland gathered at UCC on February 26th 2010 to hear eminent keynote speakers discuss the role of the ‘Qualified Person’ (QP) in the pharmaceutical sector.
The symposium titled: “The Role of QP – The Paradigm for the 21st Century” was held in conjunction with the MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology & Quality Systems programme established by UCC’s School of Pharmacy in 2007 with support from Amgen, to meet the growing demand for QP in the pharmaceutical sector in Ireland.
Keynote speakers included: Ms Valerie Mulholland, Founder and Senior Consultant at GMP services, Dr Colman Casey, Director of Research, College of Medicine & Health, UCC; Mr Stan O’Neill, Managing Director at The Compliance Group and Mr Paul Sexton, GMP Manager, Irish Medicines Board.
Dr Brendan Griffin, Programme Director, said the symposium was of significant interest to industry-based pharmaceutical scientists as the event included both keynote speakers and workshops highlighting manufacturing & quality issues in the modern pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
The MSc programme at UCC represents a key element of the interaction between the School of Pharmacy and pharmaceutical companies, helping to develop collaborations and serving to enhance the mutual interests of UCC and the pharmaceutical industry – which is particularly relevant in light of the changes in the Irish industry with greater emphasis on the higher value ‘knowledge-led’ processing operations, such as R&D and specialised pharmaceutical processing, with less reliance on bulk manufacture.
