Sixth Annual Pharmacy Prize-giving

14 Jun 2012

The sixth Annual Pharmacy Prize-giving for the 2012 graduating class took place in the School of Pharmacy, this morning 14 June 2012 , just prior to student graduation.    Professor Julia Kennedy extended a warm welcome to parents, graduates and staff.  The representatives of organisations who had donated prizes were thanked for their support and their continuing generosity noted and appreciated by all.

The prizes presented were:

  • The Cloyne Pharmacy Prize for the Most Improved Student over the BPharm was presented by Therese Cahill on behalf of Mr Dermot Twomey to Dean Fitzgerald.
  • Activis Prize for overall excellence in Pharmaceutics was presented by Ms Irene Sheehan, Marketing Director, Actavis Ireland to Kieran Walsh.
  • McNeil Prize for overall excellence in Clinical Pharmacy Practice was presented by Mr Barry Allen from McNeil to Sarah Marshall
  • School of Pharmacy Medal for top student in the BPharm degree David Walsh was presented by Professor Julia Kennedy

The School has been fortunate in the support it has received over the years from various quarters with respect to acknowledging students achievements.  McNeil Pharmaceuticals and Cloyne Pharmacy have been stalwarts since the School’s establishment and Mr Barry Allen from McNeil Pharmaceuticals has been particularly generous in the time and support he has given in sustaining these prizes.

Mr Dermot Twomey from Cloyne Pharmacy has been supporting the Most Improved Student Prize since 2007 and this award is valued by students and staff alike.

The School of Pharmacy would like to acknowledge Actavis Ireland for the second year of their generous sponsorship of their prize, and in particular to Ms Irene Sheehan, Marketing Director, for taking the time out to present this award.  In difficult economic times support of this nature that acknowledges the students’ efforts is greatly valued by staff at the School.

This prize giving ceremony is greatly appreciated by the parents as it gives them the opportunity to meet with the staff and other parents and also put faces to the names they have heard about over the previous four years their children have been at Pharmacy School.

As this was Professor Julia Kennedy’s last official function in the School of Pharmacy, Professor Peter Weedle wished her well and thanked her on behalf of the staff and students for her contribution and support in the School of Pharmacy.  We wish Professor Kennedy much success as she returns to her native New Zealand to take up a post as Head of School at the University of Auckland.
