17 Jun 2013

The annual Pharmacy Prize-giving for the 2013 graduating class took place in the School of Pharmacy, this morning 13 June 2013 after the University conferrings   Professor Caitriona O’Driscoll, Head of School welcomed, parents, graduates, staff and the sponsors of these annual prizes.  The representatives of organisations who had donated prizes were thanked for their their continuing generosity which is very much appreciated by the School

The prizes presented were:

  • The Cloyne Pharmacy Prize for the Most Improved Student over the BPharm was presented to Stephen Casey by Alison Connors on behalf of Mr Dermot Twomey.

  • McNeil Prize for overall excellence in Clinical Pharmacy Practice was presented to Aidan Morris by Mr Barry Allen from McNeil
  • School of Pharmacy Medal for top student in the BPharm degree was presented to Sadhbh Ni Cheallaigh by Professor Caitriona O’Driscoll

For the first time this year the National University of Ireland has included Pharmacy in the NUI Dr H H Stewart Medical Scholarships and Medals.  Two nominations who will go forward to compete with other Pharmacy students at a national level, based on their OSCE results.  The two students nominated were Marie O’Halloran and Arthur O’Leary.

The School has been fortunate in the support it has received over the years from various quarters with respect to acknowledging students achievements.  McNeil Pharmaceuticals and Cloyne Pharmacy have been stalwarts since the School’s establishment and Mr Barry Allen from McNeil Pharmaceuticals has been particularly generous in the time and support he has given in sustaining these prizes.

Mr Dermot Twomey from Cloyne Pharmacy has been supporting the Most Improved Student Prize since 2007 and this award is valued by students and staff alike.

The School of Pharmacy would like to acknowledge Actavis Ireland for the second year of their generous sponsorship of their prize, and in particular to Mr John McHale, for taking the time out to present this award.  In difficult economic times support of this nature that acknowledges the students’ efforts is greatly valued by staff at the School.

This prize giving ceremony is greatly appreciated by parents as it gives them the opportunity to meet with the staff and for them to sit for a few minutes where their children have sat for the previous four years!

Professor O’Driscoll wished all the graduates well and informed them about the School’s plans to launch a Pharmacy Alumni at a dinner on 30 November 2013.  She encouraged the students to keep in contact with the School as their careers develop.
