Cake Sale in aid of Suas Educational Development

21 Mar 2011

On the morning of Monday 21st March the entrance of the Cavanagh Pharmacy Building was brimming with activity as the School of Pharmacy’s annual bake sale got underway. This year the bake sale, organised by postgraduate students in the school, was in aid of the Suas Volunteer Programme. Third year Undergraduate student Justin Daly was selected to participate in the volunteer programme organised by Suas Educational Development and will be travelling to Kolkata, India (Calcutta) in Summer 2011. He aims to raise €3,000 for the charity.

Founded in 2002, Suas Educational Development is a movement dedicated to supporting high quality education in targeted under-resourced communities. Suas facilitates young people to address educational disadvantage with programmes in its partner schools in India, Ireland and Kenya. Suas is secular and is a registered charity supported by Irish Aid.

Together Justin and his team will provide over 30,000 hours of service through a ten week programme in India and Kenya. They will provide teaching assistance to over 100 teachers improving the education of over 2,000 children in the developing world. Justin will be a member of the team travelling to the DAS (Development Action Society) training centre in South East Kolkata.

DAS serves almost 600 children through progressive interventions that include pre-primary schools and coaching centres. These centres aim to get children in slum areas into mainstream education. DAS also works extensively in the area of health promotion and women empowerment running a number of vocational training centres for women.

Preparations for the bake sale began many weeks ago with final promotion and announcements within the school taking place last week. The event was a tremendous success with a large assortment of cakes, breads, brownies, cookies and scones and teas and coffees were served throughout the day.
