On Wednesday 1st May, 26 fifth year students and their guidance Counsellor Pauline Cudmore from St. Mary’s secondary school in Mallow visited the CSSRC, to participate in a taster workshop. These students have all expressed an interest in Nursing or other Health related profession. The workshop was developed to provide some insight into the nursing programmes on offer and the nature of these courses. Nuala Walsh clinical skills manager, in conjunction with Lecturers from the SONM presented an overview of the undergraduate programmes. Students were particularly interested in the Nursing and German programme, due to begin in the SoNM in September 2013.
In the spirit of Active learning students were divided into small groups and participated in four interactive workshops, facilitated by CSSRC staff and BSC Nursing students. The workshops explored aspects of hand hygiene, CPR, vital sign recording and aseptic technique. Although students looked a little worried when we asked them to wear scrub tops they very quickly engaged in the spirit of the occasion and participated enthusiastically. The 5th years also had the opportunity to talk to existing students to get a glimpse of the student perspectives!
The visit culminated in a tour of the recently opened simulation suite, where students were encouraged to engage in informal role-play, to showcase the potential of the suite to create a simulated clinical experience. Overall the day was a great success and from both the students and CSSRC team perspective.
